8 Tips for Managing Discoloration in the Summer
Summer can be tough on your skin, especially if you’re dealing with hyperpimentation. Here are some of our favorite tips to help manage and prevent skin discoloration during these hot and humid summer months.
We bet number 7 will come as a suprise!
SPF is your BFF: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN! You need a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 and at least 5% of zinc or titanium dioxide. Make sure you are reapplying every two hours and also check that your product is water resistant if you will be swimming or sweating.
Protective Clothing: Wear wide brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from direct sunlight.
Hydration: Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using a good moisturizer.
Refresh Your Skin Care Routine: Incorporate products like Vitamin C and Tyrosinase Inhibitor which can help makes your sunscreen stronger and improve skin tone. Tyrosinase inhibitors are compounds that inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme crucial for the production of melanin specifically caused by sun, heat, hormones and inflammation. By reducing melanin production, these inhibitors target hyperpigmentation, melasma and acne marks. My favorite is Even Tone Correcting Serum by Skin Better Science!
Avoid Peak Sun Hours: If possible, try to stay out of the sun during its peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Treat Sunburns Promptly: If you get sunburned, apply aloe vera or a cooling gel to soothe the skin, and stay out of the sun until it heals.
Be Mindful with Citrus Fruits: We all love a nice refreshing drink here and there, but be cautious when squeezing in lemon or limes! If the juice from these fruits hits your skin in the sun, it can cause a rash called Phytophoto Dermatitis aka “margarita burn”. If your skin does make contact with citrus juice, make sure to wash the area right away or you may be left with a not so pretty stain!
Schedule a Treatment: Book yourself a HydraFacial or chemical peel to help cleanse, exfoliate and rehydrate the skin which will help with cell turnover and better product absorption. Remember - the BioRe Peel is summer time safe!
By following these tips, you can manage and maintain healthy, radiant skin throughout the summer while still enjoying yourself and protecting your skin!
